How a gold coin's value is calculated

What a gold coin is worth as metal depends only on how much pure gold it contains, not on its total weight. A Krugerrand weighs 33.93 g, but because it is 22 karat (0.9167 fine) it contains exactly one troy ounce of gold, the same as a Maple Leaf of 0.9999 fineness.

Metal value = fine gold (g) × (troy ounce price ÷ 31.1035)

Why coins sell above their metal value

Dealers sell bullion coins with a premium over their gold content to cover minting, distribution and their margin. When buying back, they usually pay close to the metal value or slightly below. Rare dates or coins in excellent condition may be worth much more to collectors.
