Calendar: dates that can move the price

  1. US inflation (September)

A hot reading supports high rates and weighs on gold. A soft one helps it.

  2. Federal Reserve decision

The month's biggest event. A softer tone would be positive for gold.

  3. US jobs report (October)

Another weak number would raise expectations that the Fed stops hiking.

  4. Diwali in India

Seasonal peak in jewelry and bar buying.

  • When the dollar rises against your local currency, gold is worth more locally even if the international price stays flat. Check the price in your own currency, not just in dollars.
  • A local buyer always pays a discount to cover assaying, refining and transport. Use the international price as your reference when negotiating.
  • Production costs rise every year, so margins depend more and more on prices staying high.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold spot price?

It is the reference price for immediate delivery of one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of fine gold on the international market. It is quoted in US dollars and changes continuously while markets are open.

How is the price of 18K, 14K or other karats calculated?

Multiply the fine gold price by the purity of the alloy. 18K gold contains 750 parts per thousand of gold, so it is worth 75% of the 24K international price.

Why does a dealer pay me less than this price?

Local buyers deduct assaying, refining and transport costs plus their margin. For mined gold or doré, the actual grade and impurities also matter.

How often is the price updated?

The page checks the price every 2 seconds, and the chart history is saved every 5 minutes and daily for one year. On weekends the market is closed and the price stays at the last close.

Can I see the price in my currency?

Yes. Choose your currency in the selector at the top of the page. The calculator also lets you pick a currency.
